Cozy Chinchillas

INCLUDED IN ZOOFARI / ZOOTOPIA

Chinchillas are slightly larger and more robust than ground squirrels, and are native to the Andes mountains in South America. They live in colonies at very high elevations. Historically, chinchillas lived in an area that included parts of Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, and Chile, but today, colonies in the wild are known only in Chile.

The chinchilla has the densest fur of all mammals that live on land. By the end of the 19th century, chinchillas had become quite rare after being hunted for their ultra-soft fur. Domesticated chinchillas are sometimes kept as pets, and may be considered a pocket pet.

Cute Guinea Pigs

Despite their common name, Guinea Pigs are not in the pig family, nor do they come from Guinea in Africa. The origin of their name is still unclear; but they originated in the Andes of South America.

In Western society, the domestic guinea pig has enjoyed widespread popularity as a household pet, since its introduction by European traders in the 16th century.

Their docile nature; friendly, even affectionate, responsiveness to handling and feeding; and the relative ease of caring for them have made and continue to make guinea pigs a popular choice of pet.
